Now we move onto Self-introduction. Self-introduction is also very important for other occasions. It's not only that probably in the very beginning the interviewers may ask you to make self-introduction. Self-introduction could also happen in other occasions that you want to introduce yourself to an international student body or to some foreign guests or you are making a speech to foreign guest. Whatever there is so many occasions that you need to do self-introduction. Data shows that 95% of the time that when a Chinese is expected to speak in English, he or she is making self-introduction. So this is super important. So now, let's go deeper into this. What are the questions that may invite you to do a self-introduction. Question could be like this, please introduce yourself brieflyor you would like to talk about yourself, let us know more about you. Questions like this, and then you start your self-introduction. And then what to include in your self-introduction? In the beginning I want to give you an active example, but it happens a lot. Say some guy was interviewed for a job and in the very beginning he goes like this. I'm 24, I'm still single. I belive in God. I'm good in health I have, even I'm a language major. I have taken calculars. I was born in [FOREIGN] province. I'm an honest person. See, here are all the things that you will avoid in your self-introduction, and he did all of that. Your age, that's very stupid information, because your resume, you already have put down the birth date. So they can calculate. Marital status. That is irrelevant. Okay? Even some companies may have some prejudice. Some companies they prefer if you're single that means that you are able to travel around. You are more available for business travels. This is what they have in their mind. If you are married then they will think about otherwise. But you don't tell them in the beginning, unless you are asked these question. Okay, your religious belief, this may invite religious bias if the interviewer didn't have the same belief so it could happen. Health condition it is something that some Chinese students put down on their resume as we've mentioned that this is not appropriate. Courses taken, you don't mention that. They will find out by asking you detailed questions in your experience, project experience, whatever. Birth place, you don't tell, because some will have original bias. Like I mentioned in the beginning, some people have prejudice over people from Hunan or from special part of China. And you don't do self evaluation. You don't tell that I'm an honest guy, I'm diligent, I'm hard working. I can work overtime. No. You don't make those self-evaluations. Yes, that's a definitely a no. And what you may or may not include in your self-introduction. Like a Political status. Most likely you don't. But I mean if you're a Chinese applicant, your applying for a job in the state owned enterprises, or you're taking interview to be a civil servant, then well he said that he is a communist party member. There could be a plus. Then for Western culture maybe not. Citizenship, I mean sometimes if you are local, you have the local [FOREIGN] citizenship. Then maybe it could be something preferable but maybe not. But most timely, those young college graduates, they do not have the local residency. Your hobbies. Your hobbies may tell a lot of information. Like you say well I like playing online games. DOTA better than LOL whatever. Yes. I have a heard interviewee, some student they said this. And for girls what they mention most is that I like shopping. Okay, Shopping all the time, home and abroad. We will question, what kind of quality you have after this, hobbies? And I mean, some will say that I didn't tell about my hobbies like online games, or shopping. Those I believe are not favorable. I have mentioned that I'm a basketball player. I'm a football player. So that means that, well, the interviewer may get a message that this guy is a good teamwork player. It could be possible. But what if, if they're looking for a manager, for a leader to do something? So it could be something else. So the conclusion is that you do not mention your hobbies, unless you are quite sure that these hobbies are relevant. So I try to make some conclusion. What is a typical self-introduction? We'll safely include, number one, Greetings, like good morning, good afternoon, good evening, greetings. And then you may need to mention your Name, that is something necessary. And your Profession. You're a student, you're a senior. Good, you can say that. Your are a third year post graduate student. Yes, you mentioned that. You already have a two years working experience working in some field. You mentioned that, yes. And your reasons for coming, if you have some little time, especially for like if you are applying for overseas study, why you like to apply for this university just keep it short. And then thanks. So quite simple. These are the things you may safely include. Now I'll give you some examples, a certain way when we do self-introduction. Well, it could be from casual to formal. If you just make a very casual one, you may say, well, hi, nice to meet you, I'm David. This will do. Okay? In formal occasions, and in interview occasion. It should be something like good morning, nice to meet you, my name is David Zhang, I'm a college teacher. Or you say I teach at PK University. And then say I mean, see. So here are the very basic information you have offered. And it's very simple. And some will say, well, I don't think this is enough. I need to give more information. Try this one. Good morning, everyone. It's very nice to meet you all. My name is David Zhang, I teach intercultural communication at Peking University and I am from Beijing, China. It's my great honor to be invited to join this panel discussion. Just imagine that you are attending a panel discussion, and these are the words that would appear appropriate for their self-introduction. Yeah like this. So the other day I was attending this panel discussion. It's totally international group. We were talking about a test criteria, the passing score for a test, a new test, in Princeton University. And then everyone was asked to introduce him or herself. And I said hi everyone, I am Zhang Hongyan from Beijing, you can me David. I work as director of national IT English test service and I hope observation and experience will be helpful to this panel discussion. So, I think it will take just less than one minute. That'll be good enough. And then it gives out information that your name and how you prefer for others to call you. And also where are you from. And to be specific, you may need to mention the city. Beijing, Shanghai or whatever. And your previous or current profession, that is closely related with this panel discussion. Give them a specific background to why you are here. Well certainly we have other titles, but you simply mentioned the one that is most irrelevant. Okay. Sometimes you may need to write written style self-introduction and this happens a lot. For example, you need to post your self-introduction on the official website. Yes, or you're publishing a paper, then you may want to write something very formal in a third person view. So, it could be something like this. In Michael Zhang, Senior Vice President and Member of the Executive Committee, ABC Soft. Okay? And then Mr. Zhang, Micheal is a Senior Vice President, and a member of the Executive Committee and Secretary of the Board at Legend Holding. He is in charge of the Asset Management Division, Public Affairs Department, Finance Department, and the Hong Kong Office, whatever. Here, you have a detailed job responsibilities. But this isn't for the public to know what this guy is in charge of. Right? And it is also important that you have something about the career chap. So he joined ABC in 2010 and served in turn as Assistant to President, Assistant President and Vice President at ABC whatever. And also, Academic Background is also mentioned. So has a bachelor degree in Finance and Accounting and EMBA from Peking University. So this is a typical formal official self-introduction that will appear on such a website or you want to publish a paper. Okay.
