To finish this first module in which we have talked on the video games general concepts, we will analyze a concrete video game, more exactly, a saga, meaning to apply some of the knowledges treated until now. In this case we will go to the platform games saga Super Mario, which has been Nintendo's identity card for 30 years. The first Mario appears as a playable character in the 1981 arcade Donkey Kong. After that the arcades Donkey Kong Junior and Mario Bros will appear. In these initial video games in which Mario appears, their playability is based on laterally and vertically moving through many platforms, always reduced to the own game screen's limits. They are also used to introduce most of the characters and enemies. The character Mario keeps getting more importance until they create his own sage, which started with the game Super Mario Bros in 1985, for the NES console. In this title the game consists on platforms with a more horizontal development and with side scroll, giving more size, itinerary and speed to the levels. Here the action is already placed on the Mushroom Kingdom, which suffers under the attack of Mario's arch enemy, his nemesis, Bowser. There also appear different power ups, powerful objects which transform the character and give him special abilities, such as shrooms, flowers or stars. This title is a total classic, not only in video games, but in the modern culture of leisure and entertainment, and it will influence in many posterior platform games. This title's success inspired many sequels for the same console. Super Mario Bros 2 has two versions. Here we can see the American version, although it is inspired in Mario's world and characters, in the beginning it was a completely different game. That's why playability changes with a more vertical shifting focused to using many characters. This American version was created because they though that, for the USA audience, the Japanese version was too difficult and similar to the original. After that Super Mario Bros 3 was launched, which can actually be conceived as an evolution of the first game. It stood out because it offered a bigger detail and color level, as well as a more variate playability, it included the navigation through a world map which gives access to the different levels, as well as it showed up new mechanics, such as the feather which makes Mario fly, or new enemies such as Bowser's child. For a lot of people, during a lot of time, it has been considered one of the best games ever. Super Mario World is the first game in this saga that appears in a new console, Super Nintendo. The technological improvement can be perceived in the scenario and characters details, as well as in the sound and music quality. Playability evolves following a continuous line, adding changes to give it more variety, but keeping the essence of the saga experience, which is still based on high speed lateral shifting, defeating enemies and jumping on platforms. A big novelty is the appearance of Yoshi, which always helps the player along with Mario. After that a sequel of this title was launched for Super Nintendo, Yoshi's Island, which kept the playability but gave more importance to this character. Super Mario 64 is an inflection point in the saga, the arrival of polygonal graphics, thanks to a new console generation, brings a change in the aesthetics and the interaction with the game. We go from the lateral scrolling to a world with free movement, in which we can go anywhere. Playability wins in exploration and loses a bit of vertigo, but tries to keep the jump as the experience's main nucleus. This change inserts more complex puzzles in the playability, which loses linearity. This game is also considered one of the best games ever, as it established the bases of platforms in polygonal 3D environments, influencing a big part of the posterior games in this genre. From this moment on, Super Mario games will follow two styles a bit differentiated: on one side, games such as Super Mario Sunshine or the posterior Super Mario Galaxy. They are set in a more open world, where the player can move in all dimensions. On the other side, games such as Super Mario Land, launched for Game Boy, or titles such as New Super Mario Bros, which try to keep the 2D age playability, with more lineal and directed games. The latest games in Super Mario saga mostly highlight the social game, promoting multi-player playing and the online community, such as the recent Super Mario Maker.
