Episode 112. A couple comments with regard to Galileo's absolute prince analogy. It is clearly directed at theologians because they are not astronomers. And frankly professional theologians in Galileo's day should have known better. They were in no position to evaluate his astronomy. And this problem continues today with the topic of origins. Most of the leading anti evolutionists don't have biology degrees or even evolutionary biology degrees. For example they are educated in law, engineering, history, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, education, medicine and theology. So here's my suggestion to you, always ask, what type of doctor is making claims against biological evolution? We can now come to a conclusion regarding Galileo's remarkable hermeneutics and his science and religion relationship. First, Galileo had a peaceful relationship between his astronomy and his Christianity. There was no hint of conflict between his science and his faith. Second, Galileo believed that science does not deal with religion. As Galileo states in quote 25, the motion or rest of the Earth or the sun, are not articles of faith and are not against morals. Conclusion 3. Galileo believed that the purpose of scripture was for worship and salvation. In quote 26, he asserts the primary purpose of Holy Writ is the worship of God and the salvation of souls. Finally, conclusion number 4, Galileo's hermeneutics reflect the message-incident principle. To summarize his views, Galileo used Cardinal Baronio's hermeneutical aphorism found in quote 27. The intention of the Holy Spirit is to teach us how one goes to heaven and not how heaven goes. In other words, God's intention of the Bible is not to reveal astronomical facts about the heavens but rather spiritual truths about salvation and how to get to heaven. Please turn to page five in the handouts, for the diagram on the message-incident principle. The message of faith is about how to go to heaven. To use the words of Galileo in previous quotations, these spiritual truths deal with articles of faith, morals, the worship of God, and the salvation of souls. These messages of faith are the primary purpose of the Holy Writ and the intention of the holy spirit in the Bible. Galileo also recognized that there was an incidental ancient science in scripture. And this statements about how heaven goes in the Bible appear incidentally and are mentioned sparsely. They're also the current opinion of those times and are accommodated to the level of common people in order not to sow confusion in their minds. End of episode.
