Episode 110, as I noted in the previous episode, quotes 19 and 20 offer a summary of the Hermanudics in this course. In quote 20, Galileo recognizes that science and scripture is accommodated. He write, propositions dictated by the holy spirit where expressed by the sacred writers in such as way as to accommodate the capacities of the very unrefined and undisciplined masses. Why? In order not to sow confusion in the minds of the common people and make them more obstinate against dogmas involving higher mysteries. Indeed, I shall further say that it was not only respect for popular inability, but also the current opinion of those times. This doctrine of accommodation is so common place and so definite among all theologians, that it would be superfluous to present any testimony for it. Disputation reflects the message incident principle, the science in scripture is the current opinions of those times. In other words, it is the science of the day, and in particular, it is an ancient science. Galileo, fully accepted the principle of accommodation. He refers to accommodation eight times in the letter to Christina. And even states that it was so commonplace in the 17th century. Somehow in the 21st century many Christians have never heard of this important heuroneurotic principle. Galileo offers us a reason for accommodation in the Bible. It is to avoid pastoral problems in order not to sow confusion in the mind of the common people. This leads to the question often ask today by many people. Why is evolution not in the Bible? The answer is simple, it's to avoid pastoral problems. Just think about it. If the Bible uses an ancient astronomy regarding the daily movement of the sun across the sky, then we should not be surprised that scripture also uses an ancient biology regarding the origin of living organisms. If God would have inspired the writers to put evolution in the bible, ancient people would not have understood. And this would have undoubtedly tricked them off from accepting the more important spiritual truths. Even though Galileo had a very peaceful relationship between his science and his faith. There was conflict between him and his critics. And the central cause of this clash was poor hermeneutics. As we examine this, I'd like you to ask the question, are the issues with conflict in Galileo's time similar today with anti-evolutionism? According to Galileo scientific concordism is the root of conflict between him and his critics. In quote 21 he writes so, the reasons they that are Galileo critics advance to condemn the opinion of the earth's morbidity and the sun stability is this. Since, in many places in Holy Scripture, one reads that the sun moves and the Earth stands still. And since scripture can never lie or error, it follows as a necessary consequence that the opinion of those to want to assert the sun to be motionless and the Earth moving Is erroneous and demandable they, Galileo's critics want to extend not to say abuse it's that is the Bible's authority. So that even for purely physical scientific conclusions which are not matters of faith one must totally abandon the senses and demonstrative arguments that is scientific arguments in favor of a scriptural passage whose apparent words may contain a different indication. Clearly, Galileo's critics accept scientific concordism. They believed that the authority of the Bible extends to physical conclusions. Now, there is a superficial logic to the argument of Galileo's critics in quote 21. The bible states that the sun moves and the earth stands still. These is definitely in the scripture, the bible never lies or airs, these is a christian belief. Therefore, it is reasonable to claim that the belief, the sun stands still and the earth moves, is erroneous and damnable. But, of course there's a problem with this argument. Galileo's critics fails to appreciate the message and certain principle. To use Galileo's words from Quote 21. Physical conclusions are not matters of faith. End of Episode.
