It had been a long trip but Joe and Yvonne were nearly at their vacation destination.
The secluded getaway of Lake Arrowhead,
near San Bernardino, some four hours from their home in Las Vegas.
Joe and Yvonne were exhausted and a little bit sleepy from the nighttime drive.
Fighting heavy eyelids, Joe thread the car
between the rocky mountain side and the steep cliffs,
that gave the impossibly twisty California State Route 18 its name,
Rim of the World Highway.
In the darkness and dense chowder like fog,
driving on this road felt a little bit like racing a go cart,
blindfolded down a dusty lose track.
As they emerged from the switchback, Yvonne gasped.
Headlights flashed right in front of them.
A rock slide had caused two cars to lose control up ahead.
With ninja like reflexes Joe expertly maneuvered the car around the rocks,
debris, and other cars,
somehow avoiding every obstruction.
Yvonne's heart raced as she stared at Joe with amazement.
He was calm and poised with a slight curl of a smile in the corner of his mouth.
Why wasn't Joe more rattled?
Well Joe, like many other people with high sensation seeking
personalities thrives in situations that others might find scary or overstimulating.
In the last lessons, we discussed the biological as well
as the environmental contributions to sensation seeking.
We learned about the combinations of chemicals and
environment that might be related to the thrill seeking personality.
As you'll see in this section,
a high sensation seeking personality can influence all sorts of
activities including thrilling hobbies and ability to focus during chaotic environments.
And like Joe, where and how they travel.
And sometimes they eat strange things.
All of these habits and hobbies come with both benefits and pitfalls.
In this week, we'll take a look at some of the fascinating things that
sensation seekers do and look at some of the reasons why they do it.
After you've completed these next lessons,
you'll be able to: analyze some of
the common habits and hobbies of high sensation seekers,
explain the types of travel experiences high sensation seekers tend to enjoy,
and identify the reasons some high sensation seekers are drawn to unusual foods.
