[MUSIC] I'd now like to talk about the definition of a system, the term system is very important for us to understand. A system is made up of at least two essential parts. The essential parts of this system work together, either directly or indirectly, to influence the function of the whole of which these parts are a part of. Each part or part subset affects the behavior or properties of the whole. And no part individually, or independently, can make the whole function. A system is defined by its function within the larger system. Now those bullets will now be what I will define a little bit more to make it clearer. Another way of defining system is provided to us by the National Patient Safety Foundation. And what they say is that a system is a set of interrelated or interacting parts any one of which, if changed, can impact the overall outcome. So here are some examples of these essential parts that we would find in healthcare. Organizational culture. Technical and equipment related factors. Physical environment. Organizational goals and incentives. And professional performance and standards. Other ways of looking at essential parts are listed here, dietician, environmental service workers, pharmacists, physicians, radiologists, respiratory therapists, social workers, and the list goes on. Notice I put this list in alphabetical order, because all of these essential parts are very important in order for the final product of a hospital, excellent patient care, teaching, and research, to be accomplished. So any one of these can impact the output of the whole, in our case it's the healthcare institution.
