Hi everyone. In this video, let's take a look about what we call set dressing. Set dressing is nothing more than making your environment or your sets interesting by populating them with assets, so you can have a clear path for the character to follow or some interesting areas for the character to explore. So, let's get started. I have here a couple of assets I prepared for this demonstration which are basically a chest, a group of rocks, a coconut tree. So, let's see how we can combine these elements to create an interesting set, in this case an island. Remember that the same basic principles of composition still applies. So, have in mind our principles of repetition, variety, and unity. Okay? Let's hide this layers and let's begin by placing the overall environment on which we're going to build our set dressing. So, we have a basic island and we have a sky, and now let's see what we can do to have an interesting environment. So, let's begin with the basic chest, rock, and coconut tree. This is actually good, but it's also a bit boring because it's too lonely in the middle of the island. There is no sense of nature. There is no sense of repetition to give us unity in design. So, we can add a little bit more variety to it by including for example another coconut tree. So, let's place another coconut tree. You can see that not only I placed another tree, but I also changed the size so it looks a bit different than the previous tree. It's the same asset only rotated and tilted slightly differently, so we can have the feeling that there's another tree and not the same one repeated over and over. So, let's see how we can create an even more interesting set by adding a little bit of other assets to it. If for example, we add a new set of rocks to it, we also have a little bit more depth in our island. Again, it's the same set of rocks we have in the background. I only changed the shape of the rocks a little bit so it looks different. Okay? So, same set of rocks, same tree repeated over and over as long as you change the shapes as well as the size and orientation of your assets, you are going to have a very unique environment, but also unified by the same design. So, let's add yet another group of rocks. Again, it's the same group of rocks. I only sank them more in the sand, so only the top of the rock shows. So, you can have now a very natural environment with rock formations all around the island, and we have the feeling that there's nature in the island and not that boring lonely group in the middle of everything. If on top of this we add yet another one coconut tree, this time slightly more tilted and also rotated, so we can have a different configuration. We have even more variety, but also with unity in our island in our set dressing. Okay? So, with this basic set dressing, we created not only an interesting island, but also a path for our character. Because of the composition and the position of the rocks, everything leads to the chest in the middle of the island. We have more elements, more trees, and bigger rocks, so we can understand that that is an important spot on the island. So, use wisely all the assets you have, position them carefully in your set, direct the viewer, direct the player towards your objective, towards wherever you want. He is in your hands. So, use composition wisely, use set dressing wisely, and you'll be in complete control of the storytelling of your game. Okay? So, thanks for watching and I see you all in the next video.
