When preparing food for a patient who requires chopped food, cut food into half-inch pieces. Food should be small, bite-sized and soft. Some chewing is required for chopped diets. For a patient who requires food to be finely minced, food should be cut or processed into about eighth-inch pieces. Minimal chewing is required for minced diets. For pureed diets, food must be blended using a blender or food processor. The consistency should be smooth and similar to a mashed potato or baby food consistency. No chewing is required for pureed diets. When using a blender to puree food, use proper safety precautions to plug in the appliance. Follow manufacturer instructions and proper use of the appliance. Depending on the type of food, you may have to chop foods prior to putting them in the blender. You can add about one ounce of liquid, such as water or milk, to food to be processed. Keep one hand on the lid of the blender while blending foods. This prevents food from leaking from the top of the blender. Never use metal tools to remove food contents from the glass pitcher. Ensure the blender and pitcher is thoroughly cleaned and dried before storing for later use.
