Do you know, about 15% of this worlds population lives with some form of disability? And in this video, we'll focus on disabled people in China. 6.21% of the total Chinese population has some form of disability. Almost 21% of the Chinese disabled population live in urban areas, while the rest are in the rural areas. Just over 50% of this population have some level of education, but those with university degrees and higher constitute only 1%. And of the 83 million disabled people, the illiteracy rate is estimated at 43%. People with disabilities in China are less likely to have access to education, and are underrepresented in the work force. [MUSIC] The infrastructure to enable people with disabilities to access education and work, is being developed. The China Disabled Person's Federation was established in 1988 by the government, to provide comprehensive and effective services to disabled people. CDPF represents the interest of the people with disabilities in China, and protects their legitimate rights. Now, 43% of the licensed disabled people within the working age are employed. And there is also a disability quota of 1.5% for private and public institutions. However, many firms pay a fine to the Employment Security Fund for not meeting the quota. And the disabled population remains highly vulnerable to stereotypes, and discrimination in the work place, and the society at large.
