Hi, this is Mohamed Sawat, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at
Arizona State University and the instructor for the upcoming modules.
With data becoming bigger and bigger,
a centralized database system might not be able to handle the volume of such data and
the complexity of the application that's run on top of it.
This is why a distributed slash parallel database system may come in handy.
In this course, we will learn about the why, what and how of distributed and
parallel data management.
More specially, we will touch upon topics like distributed database architecture,
data fragmentation, distributed and parallel query execution,
as well as replicated and reliable databases.
By the end of this module, you'll be able to make an informative decision of
how to deploy a database in a distributed system to achieve efficiency,
scalability and availability for the database applications.
I hope you enjoy this module.
