[MUSIC] Hello. We've got three topics on this video, hearing impaired deaf and dumb, and deaf/mute. Let me explain a little bit about each one of these labels. Starting with hearing impaired. When you hear that term, hearing impaired, it brings thoughts of sympathy, thoughts of how you can fix the situation. We can fix it with hearing aids or other technology. With labels, calling this individual deaf or hearing impaired. And hearing impaired, why don't we call these individuals deaf? Well, Unfortunately the authority figures that we have, the medical community, governments, are the ones who have come up with this term, hearing impaired. So it sounds like we're stuck with it. Now you're going to find deaf individuals on both sides of this issue. Some will really be upset by the term hearing impaired if someone were to call them by that. Others really don't mind it. Moving onto deaf and dumb. Now this term dumb, does that mean stupid? Well, of course not, it means an individual just can't speak for whatever reason. Now deaf and mute. This individual doesn't speak, and also is deaf. So some people think that because an individual is deaf, that means that there's something wrong with their vocal cords or ability to produce sounds. But it really has nothing to do with that. It's the fact that this individual can not get the feedback through their ears. So they're not able to train on how to speak.
