[MUSIC] In today's video, I'd like to talk about the cultural versus the pathological view of deafness. Now, imagine you're in a lobby, you were doing some people watching. And you notice one individual, there's something a little different about this individual, and you come to find out, this person's deaf. Immediately, your mindset changes, you have thoughts of sympathy, you start thinking of the things that this individual can't do, like hear, speak, maybe read, write, your mind just goes in that direction. And we call that the pathological view, the medical view of deafness, instead of looking at it as a cultural difference. A lot of people would see that as a disability, not a cultural identity. These deaf individuals are part of a community, they have their own culture, values, language, history, it's definitely something to think about, all these different features in the deaf community.
