Hello and welcome to Data Science in Stratified Healthcare and Precision Medicine. I'm Frances Wong. And I'm Areti Manataki. We are your course instructors, and we're delighted that you have decided to join us on this data science journey. In this course, we are going to explore how data science is transforming the life sciences, leading to Precision Medicine and Stratified Healthcare. We live in a digital world. We're generating data in our daily interactions with many things, which we take for granted. This ranges from emails and social media posts to mobile phone records and bank card transactions. Data is all around us. An increasing volume of data is also becoming available in biomedicine and healthcare. From genomic data to electronic patient records and data collected by wearable devices. Recent advances in data science allow us to integrate different types of data for every patient, to process it at a reasonably fast rate, and to analyze it in ways that we couldn't even imagine some decades ago. Bringing different types of data together for each patient allows us to take a more personalized approach to therapies, tailoring them to suit each individual. This is Precision Medicine. Precision Medicine is an emerging field, and is transforming the medical approach to disease treatment and prevention. It focuses on identifying the most effective strategy for each patient based on genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. The ability to characterize individuals much more precisely then allows us to identify key differences across human populations, and to act accordingly in healthcare provision. This is Stratified Healthcare. So, one can consider Stratified Healthcare and Precision Medicine to go hand in hand. In this course, we will look at Stratified Healthcare and Precision Medicine from a data science point of view. There is no need for you to have a background in computer programming. This course is aimed at complete beginners in programming and computer science, and we're here to help you and support you in every step of this journey. By the end of this course, you will have learnt about some of the different types of data, and computational methods involved in Stratified Healthcare and Precision Medicine. You'll have had hands on experience of working with such data. And you will have learnt from leaders in the field about successful case studies. All these elements will hopefully give you a taste of what it means to do Data Science in Stratified Healthcare and Precision Medicine. In the next video, we will detail how the course works.
