Now let's add an area.
So you want to add an area as a feature, and it represents a neighborhood, or
a park, some larger area that you want to highlight on the map.
You have ten area choices in ArcGIS Online to choose from, and
you can choose any of these shapes or arrows, or you can draw it freehand.
I'm just going to choose the basic area function.
And similar to adding a line, you just start drawing.
And to end you area drawing, you go back to your starting point and
double click to complete.
You will need to add a title and description to this as well.
And now, that I added these two features, I want to save it again just to make sure
that I don't lose the work that I just did.
So like before, it navigated me away from the Add Features panel, but
the cool thing is now I can look at what I've created so far on my map.
So you'll see that I have contents and this is people.
And then I can click on my area, and you'll see the information that I added.
If you decide that you need to make edits to this, all you do is click Edit and
it takes you right back into the Add Features panel.
And right into that particular information window that you want to edit.
While we're here,
let's quickly cover how you can change the look of the features on your map.
So for lines and areas when you click Change Symbol,
you'll see the option to change the fill or the outline color.
You'll also be able to set, in the case of areas, transparency and line width.
And then you can see the same thing for points.
If we go back to our point and click Change Symbol,
there are a lot of shapes preloaded into ArcGIS Online that you might find useful.
And I definitely encourage you to spend some time going through all of
the different point layers to see what might be useful in your map.
I can change the simple size, if I want to make it bigger or smaller.
Once you've selected the icon that you would like to use, press OK and
then close to replace the icon, and don't forget to click save.
When you've added all the layer that you want to add to your people layer,
it's time to add another layer.
So you go back to Add, Add Map Note, and now let's add our environment layer.
Again, you use the template map note, click Create, and
now when you go into the add features panel you'll see that it's expanded.
So you have all the features you can add for the environment and
then you still have all of the features that you can add for people.
Now when you look at the main details from my map, you'll see three layers.
Animals, environment and people.
Clicking in this checkbox, I can turn any of these layers on and
off to make it easier to look at the map and make it easier to analyze the map.
Once you've added your characteristics and resources to your map,
Esri ArcGIS allows you to add public information to your map,
which is a really great resource for you to use.
Now, when you're first putting your map together but also in the next step
when you're starting to narrow down the issues you've identified on your map.
And maybe one of more and a little bit more about the issues.
You can add layers to dive a little bit deeper into the issues you've identified
and develop better questions to ask your community collaborators or
a better, more in-depth project to address the issue.
There are a couple of different ways to add layers.
It's all in the Add button.
You can search for layers on the Esri database.
And these are all publically available layers that you'll be able to search.
You can browse the living atlas layers.
You can browse these by categories and also use the search function.
Add them to the map, you just click Add Layer to map as layer,
and it'll appear on your map automatically when you click Close.
The other ways that you can add layers are to add them from the web or from a file.
We cover how to add a layer from a file in the tutorial when we talk about
how to use your Google My Maps information within this environment.
And now that you've added all these layers and your map is done,
you want to of course make sure you save.
And then you might want to share your map.
And there are a couple of different ways you can do this.
You can change who can view the map.
You can also share a link to the map.
Click Done, and then your map is done.
It's sharable, you can send the link out, you can email it.
Always make sure you click save at least one last time.
There's a lot more that you can do in ArcGIS.
We covered just the basics.
So if you're interested in customizing your icons, or adding photos to your info
windows, all of that is covered in the digital mapping with ArcGIS tutorial.
>> So there you have it.
This week ,we walked you through step two in the formula mapping.
We covered the roots and shoots community mapping concept and history.
We also practiced using three main mapping tutorials, which were community
mapping 101, digital mapping with Google, and digital mapping with Esri.
