Bio

Thomas Mandrup-Poulsen was trained as a physician scientist and is board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology. He has conducted basic and clinical research in parallel with his clinical duties until 2007 when he was recruited to the University of Copenhagen. He currently serves as Professor of Immunoendocrinology at the University of Copenhagen. He pioneered the field of islet-cell failure and destruction in diabetes mediated by innate immune mechanisms by his discovery of the inhibitory and proapoptotic actions of inflammatory cytokines, for which he was awarded the 1994 Minkowski Prize of the EASD. He has published > 350 publications, > 170 original peer reviewed papers published or in press in journals like Science, Lancet, N Engl J Med, Cell Metabolism, J Clin Invest, Proc Natl Acad Sci, J Immunol, J Biol Chem, and Diabetes. Reviews and commentaries in e.g. Nature Immunology, Nature Rev Endocrinol, Nature Clin Pract Endocrinol Metab, Nature Study, British Medical Journal, Diabetes, Diabetologia). H-index 61. Citations 13147. > 65 invited international lectures. Wide collaborative network in EU, Switzerland, USA, Canada and Australia. The focus of the Mandrup-Poulsen lab is to understand the role of transcriptional, translational and posttranslational regulation of oxidative, metabolic and inflammatory islet damage, and how it can be prevented to devise novel therapies for diabetes.
